"Telugu is spoken by about 35 million people in
Andhra Pradesh,
the southeastern Indian state constituted
in 1956 from Telugu-
speaking areas of Tamilnadu and
Hyderabad. Rich in vernacular
literature, Telugu is a Dravidian language. The Telugu script
can be followed from about the 5th century A.D. in its develop-
ment from a form of south Indian Brahmi writing. (See
Sanskrit.)
