I have worked in Northern Niger, West Africa since 1974. We
worked (for about 25 years) on the translation of the New
Testament into the Tamajaq (language spoken by the Tuaregs
of Northern Niger) language of Northern Niger (Tanassafarwat
dialect, also called Tayirt), and completed this in 2003. I
translated from the Greek text, and used the "Received Text" as
the basic text for this translation. We first printed it in 2003
(2,000 copies in paperback edition); in 2008 we printed this in a
hardback edition (1,000 copies). We transliterated this same
translation into the Arabic alphabet for the Tuareg who have
been taught to read Arabic characters in Kor_nic schools and
printed 1,000 hardback copies of it in 2007. We have just
completed preparation to print the same translation into the
Tarnajaq Cifinagh edition (an old hieroglyphic script used and
read by many unschooled Tuareg). We are not yet sure how
many of these we will print, but possibly as many as 5,000. We
have also completed the reading of the text of this translation
onto electronic media (Mp3) and use it on weekly radio
broadcasts in the Republic of Niger. We also distribute this on
audio cassettes.
