"Manipuri, or Meithei, the official language
of the State of
Manipur, India, is spoken by about
500,000 people of Manipur
and is also used as a lingua franca by many hill tribes. Manipuri
possesses an extensive literature and is widely used in education.
Once written in a script similar to Devanagari, it is now printed
the Bengali character. Manipuri
is a Kuki-Chin language of the
Tibeto-Burman family. It is
related to
Thado,
Lushai,
Hallam,
and the
Chin languages of

undertaken by Dr. Carey in 1814:
he procured some learned
natives from Munipoor, and superintended their labours. This
translation was completed, and an edition
of 1000 copies printed in the Bengalee character in 1824, at Serampore: it
