"Byelorussian, means White Russian, is spoken by more than 90 per cent of the 8 million inhabitants of the Byelorussian Republic of the Soviet Union.   This area, settled by the Eastern Slavs in the middle of the first millennium A.D., passed from Kievan control in the 13th century, to Lithuanian, and finally to Russian domination.   Declared independent in 1918, Byelorussia officially became a constituent republic of the USSR in 1922. Byelorussian is a Slavic tongue, related to Russian and Ukrainian.
