"Azerbaijani, with an estimated 7 million speakers,
is the lingua
franca of Transcaucasia. There are several distinct dialects,
three
of them spoken in the Azerbaijan SSR of
the Soviet Union, and
the rest spoken in adjacent areas of northwestern
Iran. Azerbai-
jani literature, which first appeared in the 16th century, has an
abundance of drama. The language was originally written in
Persian-Arabic script. Latin character was
instituted in 1922, but
was later replaced by the Cyrillic alphabet now in use."--1000
