"Romany is the language of the gypsies, a name they were given because of a mistaken impression that they were of Egyptian origin.   Actually, the gypsies are an Indic people who migrated westward from their homeland, arriving in Europe around the 12th or 14th century.   From there they have wandered into every corner of the world - Siberia, North Africa, the Americas, and Australia.   Although, the majority of gypsies are now settled, a picturesque minority continue the traditional itinerant life of migrant traders, entertainers, artisans, and, rarely, laborers. Although the number of gypsies throughout the world is estimated at 1 to 5 million, only about 500,000 still speak Romany, the Indo-European tongue they brought with them from their original home in northwestern India.   It is spoken with considerable dialectal variation, with a tendency to adopt the vocabulary of, and adapt syntactically to, the linguistic com- munity in which the gypsies are living.
