New Hebrides, comprises three inhabited
islands and a number
of islets. On Lifu, the largest of the islands, the 6,000
inhabitants
speak Lifu, a Melanesian language, in
two dialects (Losi and
Wete). The Maré, or Nengone,
language of Maré Island and Iai
of Uvea are also Melanesian tongues, but quite distinct.
