"Bugis, or Wagi, is spoken in southwestern
Sulawesi (Celebes).
It is an Indonesian tongue of the
Malayo-Polynesian family, so
closely related to Macassar that many
consider them to be
dialects of the same language. The Bugis alphabet, probably the
basic form from which Macassar developed, consists of 23 letters,
of which five are compound consonants. Points are added to
