Subject: Tried With Fire Both the Christian and the Bible itself is tried with fire.
We'll read several Scriptures in a minute but I wanted to give an introduction somewhat.
And conclude my statements about the singing of the Psalms.
I referred to this last night.
There is an ancient songbook here err book of songs that could have well been someone's personal song book of the Psalms.
And I explained part of this last night but part I didn't
This is 850 years old.
On the back it says psalter.
And they used to sing the Psalms for hundreds of years in the early church.
In fact up here is two pages out of an ancient choir song book of the Psalms.
You see before the invention of the printing press it was literally impossible when the scribes had to do the work of printing letter by letter.
It was impossible to afford to have a song book for every member of the choir.
So they had one large book like this.
And it would be laid on a pulpit.
And the entire choir would sing out of that large book.
These 2 pages came out of that book.
It weighs 65 pounds.
There was no suit case large enough to bring it in.
So I lifted 2 pages out to show you what it looks like.
That's on animal skins done by a scribe about 600 years old.
And that went on for a long time the singing of the Psalms being the song book in the early church.
In fact if you had ever had a crisis in your life.
Maybe a loved one near the point of death or maybe a financial crisis.
You are unable to sleep up walking the floors.
You need a promise from the Bible, the Word of God.
Where do you usually turn to to find that promise?
It's the book of the Psalms, usually.
There is many wonderful promises in the book of Psalms.
And I wish we continued to sing the Psalms in the church.
The Psalms went on for hundreds of years.
The first man credited with putting hymn singing in any church was Benjamin Keach.
That is what the historians tell us.
He was a Baptist preacher.
And he put hymn singing in a Baptist church.
It is picked up by other Baptist churches.
And later on put into other groups of people like the Methodists, Presbyterians, and so on that adopted hymn singing over the singing of the Psalms.
But when I described to you the martyrs going to the stake, in many cases they walked to the stake singing the Psalms.
Praising God.
And even like Jon Hus that I described last night.
As the fires burned his feet and his legs he began to sing the 50th Psalm.
And died singing the Psalms. [stopped] In the strength of the Psalms the martyrs went to the stake, mounted the scaffold, endured the rack, men, women and children dargged to jail. As in the days it was the Psalms Paul & Silas I Peter 1:6-7 "(6)Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: (7)That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:" (I Peter 1:6-7).
