Pulpit Speech II KL Paulson Preacher Silcox 3-2-1999The Lord's Day INTRODUCTION:
-- The idea that the 7th day Sabbath is still binding today is promoted by 'works for salvation' people. See Ephesians 2:8-9.
(Example: SDA)
-- They reject the Bible teaching that all the Law of Moses was 'blotted out' by the sacrifice of Christ on the cross (Colossians 2:14- 17).
I. The Old Testament Sabbath--Saturday.
A. Instituted by God BEFORE the giving of the Law (Genesis 2:2-3)
B. God gave the Sabbath to ISRAEL as a law (Exodus 20:8-11)
C. In the Law of Moses this commandment is put on equality with all other commandments (James 2:10)
II. The Sabbath was Done Away with the Rest of the Law
(Col. 2:14-17) --> "in respect of an holy day...of the sabbath days"-- Mention the points of 'The Law of Moses' sermon taught the week of 2-16-99
III. The Sabbath was a COVENANT or SIGN between ISRAEL & God
(Exodus 31:12-17) --> No work was to be done --> Verse 14IV. Some Modern OBJECTIONS to the Lord's Day Instead of the Sabbath.
A. A Catholic Pope changed the Sabbath to the 1st day of the week.
-- Jesus actually DID AWAY WITH it. He did NOT change it.
B. Jesus kept the Sabbath, so should we.
-- He FULFILLED the law.
-- He OBSERVED it in its highest sense, then He DID AWAY WITH it (Galatians 4:4-5; Matthew 5:17-18)-- Are you a Jew by ancestry? Jesus was & is humanly speaking by the virgin birth.
C. Paul observed the Sabbath. . .so should we (Act 18:4).
-- Paul preached to the JEWS who were gathered on the Sabbath.
He preached that the law was DONE AWAY (Col. 2:14- 27)-- Paul was also a Jew [a Hebrew of the Hebrews]. Are you?
V. WHY the 1st Day of the Week is Observed--Sunday
1. Perhaps the BEST reason: Jesus AROSE from the dead on the 1st day of the week (John 20:19; Mark 16:9)
-- His resurrection is very essential to the Christian faith (I Corinthians 15).
2. Jesus appeared to the 10 disciples on the 1st day (John 20:19-22)
3. Day of Pentecost & the Baptism of the Holy Spirit came on the 1st day (Act 2)
4. Peter preached & 3000 converts were added to the local Church on the 1st day of the week (Acts 2:41)
5. The converts were baptized on the 1st day (Acts 2:41)
6. The church in Troas assembled for worship on the 1st day (Acts 20:7)
7. Took the Lord's Supper on the 1st day (Acts 20:7)
8. Paul preached to the church in Troas on the 1st day (Acts 20:7)
9. Paul instructed the Corinthian church to make contributions on the 1st day of the week (I Corinthians 16:2)
10. The Great Commission was given to Baptist churches on the 1st day (Matthew 28:1, 19-20; Mark 16:9-15)
CONCLUSION:
-- We honor the Lord's resurrection each 1ST day of the week by assembling for worship.
-- There is no Bible proof that we wear the mark of the beast by keeping the 1st day of the week.
-- The keeping of the Sabbath was given to a PARTICULAR people.
-- Christ is the end of the law of righteousness to everyone that believeth (Romans 10:4)
