SURVEY OF THE PENTATEUCH

I. The Creation Stage   Genesis 1 - 11 <-- know general divisions

   A. The Creation of All Things (Genesis 1 - 2)

    1. First Day - Light (1:2-5)

    2. Second Day - Separating the waters (1:6-8)

    3. Third Day - Plant life (1:9-13)

    4. Fourth Day - Sun, Moon and Stars (1:14-19)

    5. Fifth Day - Fish and Fowl (1:20-23)

    6. Sixth Day - Land creatures and Man (1:24-31)

Man and woman were created on the same day.

    7. Seventh Day - God rests (2:1-3)
       1  The first Sabbath.
       4  Further particulars concerning the manner of creation.
       8  The planting of the garden of Eden, and its situation;
       15  man is placed in it; and the tree of knowledge only forbidden.
       18  The animals are named by Adam.
       21  The making of woman, and the institution of marriage.

   B. The Corruption of All Things (Genesis 3 - 5)

    1. The Subtilty of Satan (3:1-5)
       1  The serpent deceives Eve.

    2. The Sin of Adam (3:6-8)
       6  Both she and Adam transgress the divine command, and fall into sin 
          and misery.
       8  God arraigns them.

    3. The Redemption of God (3:9-23)
       14  The serpent is cursed.
       15  The promised seed.
       16  The punishment of mankind.

       22  Their expulsion from paradise.

    4. The Martyrdom of Abel (Genesis 4)

   C. The Condemnation of Things (Genesis 6 - 9)

    1. The Conditions Preceding the Flood (6:1-8)
       1  The wickedness of the world, which provoked God's wrath, and caused
          the flood. 
       8  Noah finds grace.
       9  His generations, etc.
       14  The order, form, dimensions, and end of the ark.

    2. The Salvation [physical] Through the Flood (7:1-8:22)  

       Genesis 7
       1  Noah, with his family, and the living creatures, enter the ark, and
          the flood begins. 
       17  The increase and continuance of the flood for forty days.
       21  All flesh is destroyed by it.
       24  Its duration.

       Genesis 8
       1  God remembers Noah, and assuages the waters.
       4  The ark rests on Ararat.
       6  Noah sends forth a raven and then a dove.
       13  Noah, being commanded, goes forth from the ark.
       20  He builds an altar, and offers sacrifice, which God accepts, and 
           promises to curse the earth no more. 

    3. The Tragedy Following the Flood (9:20-29)
       1  God blesses Noah and his sons, and grants them flesh for food. 
       4  Blood and murder are forbidden.
       8  God's covenant, of which the rainbow was constituted a pledge. 
       18  Noah's family replenish the world.
       20  Noah plants a vineyard.
       21  Is drunken, and mocked by his son.
       25  Curses Canaan.
       26  Blesses Shem.
       27  Prays for Japheth, and dies.

   D. The Confusion of All Things (Genesis 10 - 11)

          dispersed.

II. The Patriarchal Stage   Genesis 12 - 50

   A. The Patriarchs

    1. Abraham (Genesis 12 - 24)

       a. His Conversion (?)

       b. His Calling (12:1); Joshua 24:2-3; Acts 7:2-3
          1  God calls Abram, and blesses him with a promise of Christ. 

       c. His Commission (12:2-3)

       d. His Caution (11:31-32)
          31  Terah, with Abram and Lot, remove from Ur to Haran.

       e. His Canaan (12:4-9)
          4  He departs with Lot from Haran, and comes to Canaan.
          6  He journeys through Canaan,
          7  which is promised to him in a vision.

       f. His Carnality (first part, 12:10-20)
          10  He is driven by famine into Egypt.
          11  Fear makes him feign his wife to be his sister.
          14  Pharaoh, having taken her from him, by plagues is compelled to 
              restore her. 
          18  He reproves Abram, whom he dismisses.

       g. His Condescension (13:1-18)
          1  Abram and Lot return with great riches out of Egypt. 
          6  Strife arises between Abram's herdsmen and those of Lot. 
          8  Abram meekly refers it to Lot to choose his part of the country, 
          10  and Lot goes to Sodom.
          14  God renews the promise to Abram.
          18  He removes to Hebron, and there builds an altar.

       h. His Courage (14:1-16)
          1  The battle of four kings against the king of Sodom and his 
             allies. 
          12  Lot is taken prisoner.
          14  Abram rescues him.

       i. His Communion (14:17-24)
          17  Melchizedek blesses Abram at his return, who gives him tithes. 
          21  The rest of the spoil, his partners having had their portions he 
              restores to the king of Sodom. 

       j. His Covenant (15:1-21)
          1  God encourages Abram, who complains for want of an heir. 
          4  God promises him a son, and a multiplying of his seed. 
          6  Abram is justified by faith. 
          7  Canaan is promised again, and confirmed by a sign, and a vision, 
             prophetic of the condition of his posterity till brought out of 
             Egypt. 

       k. His Compromise (16:1-16)
          1  Sarai, being barren, gives Hagar to Abram. 
          4  Hagar, being afflicted for despising her mistress, runs away. 
          7  An angel commands her to return and submit herself, promises her 
             a numerous posterity, and shows their character and condition. 
          13  Hagar names the place, and returns to Sarai. 
          15  Ishmael is born.
          16  The age of Abram.

       l. His Circumcision (17:1-27)
          1  God renews the covenant with Abram, and changes his name to 
             Abraham, in token of a greater blessing. 
          9  Circumcision is instituted.
          15  Sarai's name is changed to Sarah, and she is blessed. 
          17  Isaac is promised, and the time of his birth fixed. 
          23  Abraham and Ishmael are circumcised.

       m. His Compassion (18:1-23)
          1  The Lord appears to Abraham, who entertains angels. 
          9  Sarah is reproved for laughing at the promise of a son. 
          16  The destruction of Sodom is revealed to Abraham. 
          23  Abraham makes intercession for the inhabitants.

       n. His Corrupted Kin (19:1-14)
          1  Lot entertains two angels.
          4  The vicious Sodomites are smitten with blindness. 
          12  Lot is warned, and in vain warns his sons-in-law. 
          15  He is directed to flee with his family to the mountains, but 
              obtains leave to go into Zoar. 
          24  Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed.
          26  Lot's wife becomes a pillar of salt.
          29  Lot dwells in a cave.
          31  The incestuous origin of Moab and Ammon.

       o. His Carnality (second part, 20:1-18)
          1  Abraham sojourns at Gerar.
          2  Denies his wife, who is taken by Abimelech.
          3  Abimelech is reproved for her in a dream.
          9  He rebukes Abraham.
          14  Restores Sarah;
          16  and reproves her.
          17  Abimelech and his family are healed at Abraham's prayer. 

       p. His Celebration (21:1-34)
          1  Isaac is born, and circumcised.
          6  Sarah's joy.
          8  Isaac is weaned.
          9  Hagar and Ishmael are cast forth.
          15  Hagar in distress.
          17  The angel relieves and comforts her.
          23  Abimelech's covenant with Abraham at Beer-sheba.

       q. His Calvary (22:1-24)
          1  Abraham is tempted to offer Isaac.
          3  He gives proof of his faith and obedience.
          11  The angel prevents him.
          13  Isaac is exchanged for a ram.
          14  The place is called Jehovah-jireh.
          15  Abraham is again blessed.

       r. His Cave (23:1-20)
