"Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil." (Ecclesiastes 8:11)

Good Verse on taking an uncompromising stand against evil or satan (e.g. Sodomites).

JFK -->

"And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment." (Ezra 7:26)

"speedily"

We just tolerate evil too much.

I. Biblical Objectives for Discipline.

#1 Obedience to the Word of God.

'I am going to do what the Bible says.'

"But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him." (II Samuel 15:26)

"To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." (Isaiah 8:20)

"(47)He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
(48)Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?"
(John 8:47-48).

"He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day." (John 12:48)

Judged by the Word.

"(21)Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
(22)But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
(23)For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
(24)For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
(25)But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed."
(James 1:21-25)

Be "a doer" of the word.

"And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?" (Romans 2:3).

"(1)I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
(2)Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
(3)For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
(4)And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."
(II Timothy 4:1-4)

"If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them." (John 13:17)

"happy"

"(3)And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
(4)He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
(5)But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
(6)He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked."
(I John 2:3-6)

#2 Removement of the Defilement of Sin.

"(1)It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
(2)And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
(3)For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
(4)In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
(5)To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
(6)Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?"
(I Corinthians 5:1-6).

"a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump"

Psalms--prayer for the judgment of sin

Verse 5

Preparatory Prayer

Verse 13: put away

"Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease." (Proverbs 22:10)

"Cast out the scorner"

#3 Correction of Other Members.

- restrains those who are on the verge of gossiping

"Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear." (I Timothy 5:20)

Very good Verse.

"(21)These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
(22)Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.
(23)Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God."
(Psalm 50:21- 23)

"Because there is wrath, beware lest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee." (Job 36:18)

"wrath"

"(5)And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
(6)For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
(7)If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
(8)But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
(9)Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
(10)For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
(11)Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby."
(Hebrews 12:5-11)

#4 Restoration of the Erring-sp? Person.

"(15)Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
(16)But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
(17)And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican."
(Matthew 18:15-17)

"gained thy brother"

"(19)Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;
(20)Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins."
(James 5:19)

This is written to the SAVED.

#5 Unscriptural for Two Church Members to Sue Each Other.

"(1)Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?
(2)Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
(3)Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?
(4)If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church."
(I Corinthians 6:1-4)

II. Ordinances of the Local Church

There are TWO (2) of them--Believer's Baptism and the Lord's Supper.

"ordinances"--'paradosis'--that which is ordered or commanded

{par-ad'-os-is}
AV - tradition (12?)
    - ordinances (1) [13?]

1) giving up, giving over; the act of giving up, the surrender of cities.

2) a giving over which is done by word of mouth or in writing, i.e. tradition
by instruction, narrative, precept, etc.; objectively, that which is
delivered, the substance of a teaching; of the body of precepts, esp.
ritual, which in the opinion of the later Jews were orally delivered by
Moses and orally transmitted in unbroken succession to subsequent
generations, which precepts, both illustrating and expanding the written
law, as they did were to be obeyed with equal reverence.
  --------------------------------------------------------

"Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you." (I Corinthians 11:2)

An Ordinance is an outward SYMBOL appointed by Christ to be observed by His churches unto the end of the age.

They commemorate a gospel truth. They declare essential truth.

They are the gospel in SYMBOL.

Freewill Baptist - hold foot washings

(1) Ordinances do NOT give eternal life.

(2) ALL ordinances MUST be exercised under (on) the authority of a church.
It is NOT a hospital 'ordinance' or (blank) 'ordinance'.

(3) The local church is to Govern and Control the Ordinances.

The Pattern of the Ordinances

Hebrews 8:

The Tabernacle in the wilderness is a good series to preach.

The Tabernacle was a FIGURE of the New Testament church.

Repent - faith in Christ, John's Baptism

#1 Baptism - baptidzo - dip or immerse

Babies are ritualized into cults.

Baptism is like dying a piece of cloth.

Did you ever bury a man with his hand sticking out?
NO.

Get them under the water COMPLETELY.

Baptism SIGNIFIES the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Problem text: I Peter 3.

"Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:" (I Peter 3:8).

Verse 8: talks about being of ONE mind.

"(15)But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
(16)Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ."
(I Peter 3:15-16)

Verse 16+: speaks of a good conscience

"(16)Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
(17)For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
(18)For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
(19)By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
(20)Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water."
(I Peter 3:16-20)

"(21)The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:" (I Peter 3:21).

"like figure"

Ethiopian eunuch's conscience told him to get baptized.

"save us" = stabilizes our mind

One cannot play games with God.

(1) Saved Person--proper candidate.

NOT babies

"(27)And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
(28)Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
(29)Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
(30)And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
(31)And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
(32)The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
(33)In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
(34)And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
(35)Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
(36)And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
(37)And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
(38)And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
(39)And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing."
(Acts 8:27-39)

Philip was from the Jerusalem church. He was led by the Holy Spirit. There was a check of the scriptural candidate. He professed that he had already been SAVED. The candidate was capable of professing.

Babies come from the womb speaking lies.

"(30)And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
(31)And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
(32)And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
(33)And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway."
(Acts 16:30-33)

He BELIEVED FIRST then later was baptized.

Why did they go outside the house?
To be IMMERSED.

"washed their stripes"--restitution of passed sins

They made the former things right as best they could.

"(41)Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
(42)And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
(43)And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
(44)And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
(45)And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
(46)And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
(47)Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved."
(Acts 2:41-47)

They believed, were baptized, then added to the local Baptist church.

(2) Scriptural Mode/Method--immersion.

"(3)Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
(4)Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
(5)For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
(6)Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin."
(Romans 6:3-6)

Water baptism is IMMERSION.

'Baby baptizing' is another gospel.

"Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead." (Colossians 2:12)

"(38)And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
(39)And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing."
(Acts 8:38-39)

"And John also was baptizing in AEnon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized." (John 3:23)

"(4)There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
(5)One Lord, one faith, one baptism,"
(Ephesians 4:4-5).

(3) Scriptural Design/Reason.

Why do we get baptized?

- To join a church.
- To profess that we have been already SAVED by the Lord Jesus Christ.

(4) Scriptural Administrator/Authority.

Blood --> Water Baptism --> Church

Order--for service, reward

"(19)Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
(20)Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."
(Matthew 28:19-20)

The local Baptist church was given the Great Commission.

Some church had to be FIRST.

Thief River Falls, MN has a Baptist church there.
