John the Baptist References

Isaiah 40:3--"The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God."

Malachi 3:1--"Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts."

Malachi 4:5--"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:"

Matthew 3:1-15--"(1)In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, (2)And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (3)For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. (4)And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. (5)Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, (6)And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. (7)But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? (8)Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: (9)And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. (10)And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. (11)I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: (12)Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. (13)Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. (14)But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? (15)And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him."

Matthew 4:12--"Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;"

Matthew 9:14--"Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?"

Matthew 11:2-5--"(2)Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, (3)And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? (4)Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: (5)The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them."

Matthew 11:7-14--"(7)And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? (8)But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. (9)But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. (10)For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. (11)Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. (12)And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. (13)For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. (14)And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come."

Matthew 11:18--"For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil."

Matthew 14:1-13--"(1)At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, (2)And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. (3)For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. (4)For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. (5)And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. (6)But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. (7)Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. (8)And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. (9)And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. (10)And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. (11)And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother. (12)And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. (13)When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities."

Matthew 16:13-14--"(13)When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? (14)And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets."

Matthew 17:10-13--"(10)And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? (11)And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. (12)But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. (13)Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist."
