Foreword

These Bible Study notes were initially
compiled and presented to the Sunday
School teachers of the Willetton Bible
Baptist Church for their preparation
in teaching the Book of Acts.   Over
the space of a year the entire Sunday
School of the Church, from the youngest
children up to the Adult Bible Class,
studied through this great book.

These outlines received a favourable
response from the teachers, and much
encouragement was given to make them
available to other churches, pastors
and teachers.

The format of these notes will offer
the user a number of advantages:
first, by appearing in an outline
form they are [...]

STUDIES IN THE BOOK OF ACTS.
By: Pastor Robert J. Sargent

INTRODUCTION TO ACTS

  1. THE WRITING OF THE BOOK OF ACTS.
     a. The Author.
God, the Holy Spirit. II Tim. 3:16; II Pet. 1:21.
     b. The Writer.
Luke, the beloved physician (Col. 4:14). Compare Acts 1:1
        with Luke 1:1-4.
     c. Date Of Writing.
A.D. 61 (or 63). Its narative ends 2 years after the
        apostle Paul came to Rome.
     d. Coverage.
The Book covers events spanning 30 years.
     e. Addressee. v1.
Luke wrote to Theophilus. (Theophilus means "Lover of God".)
From Luke 1:3, it may be that Theophilus was a high-ranking
        government official.

  2. THE NATURE OF THE BOOK OF ACTS.
     a. It Is An Historical Account.
        [...]
     b. It Is An Accurate Account.
See: Luke 1:3. Luke had "perfect understanding", i.e. he
was an eye-witness. [...] was a companion of the apostle
Paul (II Tim. 4:11). From Acts 16:10, Luke writes in the
first person, indicating that for the last 13 chapters of
the Book, Luke reported first hand.
     c. It Is An Action Account.
[...] the ACTS of the Apostles. [...]
     d. It Is A Useful Account.
Along with the Gospel of Luke, Acts was purposely written
to instruct the newly converted Theophilus in the Christian
        faith. Luke 1:4.

  1. THE THEME OF THE BOOK.
     a. The Key Verse. Acts 1:8
     b. The Key Word.
        "WITNESS". [...]
     c. The Theme Expressed.
The Book of Acts has also been referred to as :-
        i. The Acts Of The Holy Spirit.
ii. The Acts Of The Risen Christ.
iii. The Acts Of The Early Churches.
     d. The Importance Of The Book Of Acts.
The Book of Acts is a vital link between the Gospels and the
Epistles. In the Gospels we have the newly established
church of the Lord - in the Epistles we have many firmly
        grounded churches.

From a doctrinal stand-point, we learn that everybody and
everything was CHURCH-CENTERED, CHURCH-SPONSORED, and CHURCH-
GOVERNED.   It is God's plan that all [...]

  2. THE OUTLINE OF THE BOOK.
There have been a number of outlines suggested :-

                    I. THE ASCENDED LORD - Acts 1
II. THE DESCENDED SPIRIT - Acts 2
III. THE EXTENDED CHURCH - Acts 3-28

     However, [...]

    THE BOOK OF ACTS
    ================
                    I. THE GOSPEL TO JERUSALEM
                         Chapters 1-7 To the Jew
Ministry of II. THE GOSPEL TO JUDEA & SAMARIA first.
      Peter. Chapter 8 Luke 24:47
      Gal. 2:8 Rom. 1:16
III. THE GOSPEL TO THE GENTILES
                         Chapters 9-12

Ministry of IV. THE GOSPEL TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH
      Paul. Chapters 13-28
      Rom. 11:13
      II Tim. 1:11

  3. NOTES RELATING TO THE STUDY OF ACTS.

There are many books written on the Book of Acts.   Many (most)

        i. The Kingdom Of God. v3
This is a spiritual kingdom (Rom. 14:17; John 18:36)
and is defined as, "The rule of God in the hearts of

willing subjects". Luke 17:21. It is universal,
because it includes all the redeemed - John 3:5; Col. 1:
           13. The gospel of the kingdom began with the preaching
of John the Baptist (Matt. 3:2), continued with the
preaching of the Lord Himself (Matt. 4:17), and is
spread today through the agency of His churches
           (Matt. 10:6,7; 16:19).

its establishment is with the Father. v7. Matt. 24:36

        This promise was given by Jesus in John 7:37-39; 14:16-26;
15:26,27; 16:7-15. It was the sending to earth of the Third

The task of witnessing of Christ cannot be effectively
accomplished in the power of the flesh (mere human effort),
but in the power of the Holy Spirit. See: Zech. 4:6

and empowered for service. E.g. Ex. 31:3; Numb. 27:18; Judges
        6:34; II Sam. 23:2; Ezek. 2:1-3; Luke 1:15,16; Acts 2:4; 4:31;
        6:3,8; etc.

     e. The Ascension Of The Lord Jesus Christ. v9
It was necessary for the Lord to return to glory for the
Holy Ghost to come - John 16:7,8,13.

  1. THE HOPE OF THE CHURCH.   (Verses 10,11)

     a. Given By Angels.
See also: Luke 24:4; John 20:12
     b. A Personal Return.
"...this SAME Jesus..." I Thess. 4:16; John 14:3
     c. A Visible Return.
        [...] Rev. 1:7
     d. A Certain Return.
        [...]
        See: I John
3:2; II Pet. 3:10 - note the 'wills' and 'shalls'.
     e. A Premillenial Return.
"...in LIKE MANNER..." Jesus ascended from the Mount of
Olives (v12), and Zech. 14:4 tells us He shall return to this
very mount at His coming in power and glory to set up His
        millennial kingdom, Zech. 14:8,9.
     f. This Promise Is Part Of The Hope Of Every Believer.
        Tit. 2:13.

  2. THE MEETING OF THE CHURCH.   (Verses 12-14)

Many people believe and teach that the 'Church' did not begin
until the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2.   The evidence from Scripture
shows a church in existence some time before Pentecost - doing
missionary work (Matt. 10:5-7), baptising (John 4:1,2), observing
the Lord's Supper (Matt. 26:26-29), singing (Matt. 26:30; Heb. 2:12)
    and many other things.   [...]

Here in Acts 1 (before Pentecost), we find this first church had
a meeting place, a membership roll, and held business meetings.

    1. The Place.   v13
They assembled in the upper room.   [...] the fact of a
place suggests definite locality.   All churches, by definition

      are local.

    1. The People.   vv13,15
This was a growing church.   [...]
      (I Cor. 12:28- 'first apostles').
Here there are 120, and soon thereafter over 500 (I Cor. 15:6).
    2. The Pastors.   v13
They were the apostles.   What is an apostle ?   [...]
      - they must have been eye witness-
es to the resurrected Christ (Acts 1:22; I Cor. 9:1) and been
audibly sent by the Lord Jesus Christ.   [...]
    3. The Prayer.   v14
The attitude of this 'church in waiting' is noteworthy :-
       i. Their obedience.
          [...]
       ii. Their expectation.
           [...]
       iii. Their Unity.
            [...]
       iv. Their Prayer.
           [...]

Think of the opposite situation.   [...]

  1. THE BUSINESS OF THE CHURCH.   (Verses 15-26)

    [...]

Peter was the new pastor (John 21:15-17), heading the apostles
who also acted as pastors until the dispersion (Acts 6:2).

     a. Pastoral Initiation. vv15-20
Business meetings are called for by the pastor, and are
only conducted to fulfil the needs of the Scripture. v16.
     b. Pastoral Leadership. vv21,22.
The pastor does not decide issues outside of the expressed
will of the church - but must give the church leadership
and guidance before its decision. Here Peter instructs
the people about what to vote for - not who to vote for.
     c. Proposals Put Forward. v23

    1. Prayer Made.   [v24]
This is vital aspect of any church business meeting.   Each
member must pray about God's will - that is how a spiritual
      democracy determines God's will.
    2. Election.   v26
A congregational vote.   "they appointed" (v23), "they prayed"
      (v24), "they gave forth" (v26)
    3. Matthias Chosen.   v26
There are some who teach [....] God's choice was
Paul.   They cite the lack of mention of Matthias as proof
that the Lord never owned his ministry.   But :-
       i. Other apostles were never heard of by name after Acts 1.
ii. The Lord promised to ratify all church decisions in
           Heaven
           Matt. 18:17,18.

    ACCOMPANYING NOTES.

   HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM.

We come to one of the great areas of confusion in Christendom
today - the subject of Holy Ghost baptism.

   [...]

Then there is the more traditional interpretation of Holy
Spirit baptism - a position which states that "each believer is
baptised by the Holy Spirit into the 'body of Christ' at the moment
of conversion"
.   Such a nice sounding theory also requires us to
believe in the 'invisible, universal, church - body of Christ' theory.

... there are only six passages of
Scripture that actually mention 'Baptism with the Holy Ghost'.

  1. Matthew 3:11
"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he
that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am
not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy
    Ghost, and with fire:"

  2. Mark 1:8
"I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall
baptize you with the Holy Ghost."

  3. Luke 3:16
"John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you
with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of
whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you
with the Holy Ghost and with fire:"

  4. John 1:33
"And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with
water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the
Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he
which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost."

  1. Acts 1:5
"For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be
baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence."

  2. Acts 11:16
"Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said,
John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized
    with the Holy Ghost."

As we shall now see, there are some very interesting facts
derived from these verses.

FACT 1 - THE HOLY SPIRIT DOES NOT BAPTISE ANYONE.

[...]

  1. Implication 1.
To say, as does Scofield, that the 'Spirit forms the church
by baptising all believers into the body of Christ'
    is
    nonsense.

FACT 2 - EACH VERSE IS REFERRING TO ONE SPECIFIC EVENT.

[...]

The last verse (Acts 11:16) is reflective - looking back.

[...]

Acts 1:5 narrows in on the actual time for us with the phrase,
"not many days hence".

It is obvious that the single event of Christ baptising with the
Holy Spirit occured ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST.

  1. Implication 2.
To seek some baptism with, in, or by the Holy Spirit as an
on-going experience is of no use.   The Scriptural event was
    'once only'.

FACT 3 - THE PROPHECY OF JOHN IS SYNONOMOUS WITH THE PROMISE
OF THE FATHER
.

Acts 1:4 and Acts 1:5 should be read together.   When this is
done, it is readily seen that the Lord Jesus Christ meant the
same thing when speaking of the promise of the Father and the
words of John the Baptist.

The Promise Of The Father : John 14:26
This is the sending of the Holy Spirit to the world.   When the
second Person of the Trinity returned to heaven and took His
seat, as it were, at the table of the Godhead, the third Person,

as it were, vacated His seat and came down to earth.   When He
came on the day of Pentecost, every believer was submerged into
His glorious Person.

[...]   And this He did
once for all.

  1. Implication 3.
To make Holy Spirit baptism and the sending of the Comforter
two different events is to fly in the face of Scripture.

FACT 4 - HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM IS NOW SYNONOMOUS WITH RECEIVING
THE HOLY SPIRIT AT SALVATION
.

The context of Acts 11:16 (an event which occured some time
after the day of Pentecost) explains the significance of Holy
Spirit baptism :-

  1. It Is A Gift.   Acts 11:17.   Also, Acts 8:20; Acts 2:38,39.
  2. It Is For Those Who Believe.   Acts 11:17
  3. It Is Indicative Of Real Salvation.   Acts 11:17; 19:2.
  4. It Was Pre-requisite Evidence Of Salvation.   Acts 10:47
  5. It Is Also Called "Receiving The Holy Ghost".   Acts 10:47

Note: Christ's baptising with the Holy Ghost occured as a
"once-only" event at Pentecost.   It is incorrect to say
this baptism occurs today when a soul trusts Christ.
As the diagram above shows, one baptism - many receivings.

WHAT ACTUALLY OCCURRED ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST ?

The day of Pentecost was a Jewish feast day on which occured
some remarkable events.

 c. The "Repeatable" Events Of Pentecost.
    i. Believers were filled with the Spirit - Acts 2:4
ii. The church was empowered to witness - Acts 1:8
iii. Souls were saved, baptized, and added - Acts 2:41

WHAT ABOUT I CORINTHIANS 12:13 ?

"For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether
we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have
been all made to drink into one Spirit."

[...]

  1. Does The Holy Spirit Baptise Anyone ?
We have seen He does not.

  1. Is 'Baptism With The Holy Ghost' A Continuing Event ?
We have seen it is not.   (Paul ....)

  2. Is The 'Body Of Christ' A Universal, Invisible Thing ?
As we shall see in Unit 8 it is not.
Actually, I Cor. 12:27 makes this clear, for Paul was
addressing himself to the Church AT Corinth (a localised,
    visible, entity).

  3. Is There One Baptism, Or Several Baptisms ?
According to Eph. 4:5, there is ONE baptism!
    [...]
    - Matt. 20:22,23
    [...]
Paul wrote Ephesians 4:5 some 33 years after these events,
and the ONE baptism he refers to is Scriptural baptism of
believers in water on the authority of a church.   The command
to baptise, [...], is until the end
    of the world !

  4. So, How Do We Interpret I Cor. 12:13 ??
    As follows :-
    1. "For by one Spirit" - salvation (Because of the Spirit)
    2. "are we all baptized" - believer baptism
    3. "into one body," - church membership
    4. "whether we be Jews or Gentiles," - no racial distinction
    5. "whether we be bond or free;" - no class distinction
    6. "and have been all made to drink into one Spirit." -
No favouritism in the blessings of Christ.

        filled with the Spirit are:-
        i. A Clean Vessel - II Tim. 2:19-22; II Cor. 7:1; John 13:10
        ii. Ask - Luke 11:13.

           [...]
           Verses 9-11 indicate known dialects
and languages. See also Rev. 5:9g.
ii. Speaking in another language is not a sign of having the
            Holy Spirit.
            [...] believers
were filled with the Holy Spirit and did not speak in
            tongues - e.g. Acts 4:8,31; 7:55; 9:17; 13:9,52.
iii. The miracle of being able to speak in another language
without formal training was a sign to unbelieving Jews.
             See: I Cor. 14:21,22; Is. 28:11.
In some instances, the unbelieving Jews were Christians
             See: Acts 10:44-46; 11:1-3,15-18.
iv. The miracle of tongues was a temporary sign-gift.
I Cor. 13:8. The gift of the ability to speak in an
unknown foreign language without training would cease
"when that which is perfect is come" (I Cor. 13:10)
This refers to the completed WORD OF GOD.

  2. THE PREACHER OF PENTECOST.   (Verses 14-36)
    1. The Preacher.   v14
The apostle Peter.   This was the commencement of the "both
      in Jerusalem"
      stage of Acts 1:8.
    2. The Prophecy Of Joel.   vv16-21
The events of the day of Pentecost were NOT a fulfillment of
      Joel's prophecy in Joel 2:28-32.

The "this is that" of verse 16 is not referring to the
events prophecied by Joel, but to the Spirit of God mentioned
by the Old Testament prophet.   Peter used the prophecy of
Joel to explain to the incredulous Jews the Holy Spirit.
His conclusion (Acts 2:33) indicates the subject.
Joel's prophecy relates to the second coming of Christ.
